It’s been another month since the last five chapters were done. That’s in part due to August being a month where I tend to take a mental vacation from everything, but mostly because I have begun to write in a more random order based on my day to day mood. Chapters 21 to 25 are all completed now in the first draft, but I’m also done about a chapter and a half in the next chunk, so the draft is still trotting along.
One chapter in this section was the first real look at the world of The Lieutenants, those soldier side-characters I wrote a series of posts on (note the name Arturus in the picture). There was a fight-scene on the deck of a ship. While writing it, and reflecting on some past action scenes, I realized I have some skill in that area. Part of that particular chapter, number 21, will be the next excerpt posted here. I was going to post for my scout POV, Zephir, but when I read through the first draft of the chapter I had in mind, it turns out there are so many little problems with it that I’d have to perform heavy revision to make it presentable. The first look at Zephir will have to be from a different chapter.
I really enjoyed writing all five of the chapters in this section. There was a nice variety of scenes, and each had a measure of excitement in it showing me the plot is moving forward as intended. Tension is rising in the north-west (Talon), as POV Rees’s unit is given strange orders, secret orders straight from the top. What could it mean?
It was also nice to see Andro return, the old-man senator. He’s been out of the picture since chapter 10, but he came back in style with a bit of political conspiracy, and well, the chapter took place in the arena, need I say more? Solans love their gambling, especially Andro.
Thank you for reading!
