The Lieutenants: 1st, Otannus

“There is a greatness that comes only once every few generations. A talent so rare, some are born and die without witnessing its mark on history. Otannus does not belong to that highest order, for he is greater. He is the anomaly of time. His is the talent that comes only Once. He has no equal.”

Otannus [OH-TAN-NUS] was the youngest known Aquari to earn the title. He became a Lieutenant, non-controversially and unanimously, at an age when Aquari were supposed to still be in training, yet to be soldiers let alone officers. It was unheard of as nothing of the sort had been done before or since. During our story he is in his late thirties. By appearance, he does not seem to live up to his reputation, being of average build and height, but there is an unmistakable aura around him, something that everyone can feel but no one can explain. It is usually the case with ‘super stars’ that when in their company one finds they are just as human as anyone else, a real person with real problems, but that is not the case with Otannus.

He wields a long, one-handed and single bladed sword in one hand, his other hand free with both the forearms heavily armoured for blocking or striking.

Otannus is respected universally, and although he is not the best at any one combat category (strength, speed, endurance, intelligence, etc.) like some are, he is probably a close second in all of them. He is known simply as the best and the one who never loses, and is given near complete freedom on the battlefield to do as he pleases. For he can do the impossible in battle; he can be…perfect.

Otannus’s appeal as a character comes from the great sense of awe that he inspires, and the fact that he is such a mystery to other characters. Since he has no equal he is somewhat impossible to fully comprehend. He is also capable of inspiring fear, in a race that is known for its fearlessness. Otannus is a pivotal character in this world’s conflicts, single handedly altering the result of any battle he is a part of.

This ends The Lieutenants posts. I hope that you have enjoyed them as much as I. Be wary, for as you come to invest your own emotions in a main character or two and walk alongside them on their journeys, know this: The Lieutenants are somewhere out there, and they are coming to get you!!

Look for a poll coming soon to choose which of them you like best.

  1. Perfection on the battlefield, must be nice. I like that a handful of heroes (or villains) can alter the tide of a war. I recently watched Red Cliff, and there were several warriors that made a numerically inferior army become far superior.Worth a watch

    1. I checked it out on IMDb, looks like something I would enjoy. Thanks for the suggestion.
