The Academic lives in the great, shared, Holy City of Penta with her father, a Polarian councilman. For his young and bright, intelligent daughter, he has privately hired a prominent Kanari scholar to enhance her learning. It is a controversial move, as scholars are known to dabble with philosophical topics that extend far beyond the socially acceptable, but he knows that she deserves more than what she will ever find in the segregated girls’ educational experience, as limited as it is.
The Academic quickly learns that her knowledge of history is greatly lacking, and her limited perspective on the world is brought to light by the new, vastly experienced teacher. The old man appears to know everything there is.
The events of the Final War were terrible, and it is understandable why no one wants to talk about them, especially during the long Peace. Yet the lessons of humanity it holds may be necessary in moving forward, to avoid the mistakes of the past from ever happening again. But it may be far too late. The Academic sees those same signals of war in the small bits of political information her father trusts her with.
As conflicts around the centralized city rise, the once most peaceful place in all the world will find out it is not immune to the outside chaos, and this young girl finds herself caught in the middle.
