Shocking Revelation! from an early (awful) map drawing

I found this map in my pictures folder a few days ago. I’m happy that I saved it because it was fun, even funny, to see how my original idea has changed over time. This is the very first map attempt I made. I drew it on my laptop using Paint. Something very weird happened though while I was looking at this picture, and it shocked me, almost blew my mind a little. Apparently, this picture is dated June, 2011. Wait…what?!

I swear this idea began last year (2012) sometime in spring, I’ve always went with May. What in the world is happening? So, everything I’ve said about my idea’s beginnings and past should just be thrown to the winds. Especially since it definitely took time between the actual forming of this idea and creating this map. I mean, this idea is then probably even older than June 2011. Crazy stuff.

It made me think a bit about the idea for FOTS itself, and how it started. I see now that it in fact came from an older idea that was sort of similar, still with the whole conflict of nations plot. When I went back to that one, and the parts I remembered, I thought, “man, that had some really cool ideas, didn’t it?” FOTS is the evolution of that old plan, and has obviously evolved even more since the above map was made. Apart from the obvious land shape, I see the old roads plan I had. That has definitely changed. I still have roads that lead from the central city to the other capitals, and obviously those within nations linking cities, but I have removed the international roads between capitals. The people in my world, deep down, don’t get along too well. The second notable difference was the colour changes. The grey region in this old map has since been changed to orange and black, and the orange has changed to a tan/sand colour. The biggest colour change was more recent, with the blue area. I had always originally had the two rival factions (the two opposing cities which drive the main plot, Aquari and Esteri) to be turquoise and indigo. However, I realized after finalizing the details of my separate Blue nation, that indigo was too close to blue, so it has now become red, and the old red one is now a darker shade, wine-red.

I’m sure all of you have dealt with plenty of significant changes to your worlds, maps, characters, etc. Have you ever dealt with a change in this way? It doesn’t even have to be with writing. I’m sure there have been other times where I’ve found out my memories were proven wrong.
